The Echo Chamber Effect

Comfort Is Easy to Maintain

Most platforms give you tools to shape what you see. Mute, block, unfollow. Used occasionally, they reduce noise. Used constantly, they remove friction.

Friction is where disagreement lives. Listening to someone you strongly dislike takes effort and patience. Not to agree or persuade, but to understand how they reached their position. Many people discover they don’t have the stamina for that.

Avoidance feels like control. The feed becomes calmer. Opinions feel safer. Conflict fades. What’s left is a version of the world that rarely pushes back.

Systems notice this behavior. When dissent disappears quickly, it gets shown less often. The environment adjusts to reduce the chance you’ll disengage. Comfort becomes the default setting.

Over time, the absence of challenge lowers tolerance for it. The less friction you experience, the harder it becomes to face.
